Garlic and Peas

The garden is looking great!  Thanks to everyone who pulled out the peas.  The pea plants still left will gradually dry out in the heat, and then we can gather the dried peas for seeds to plant next year :)

I think the garlic is close to being ready to harvest.  They need three weeks of zero watering so they can dry out.  We got a bit of rain last week, so the soil is a bit more moist than I would like, but the forecast is for mainly sunny weather in the near future.  Perhaps we can meet next week to harvest the garlic.  Let me know (by commenting here or by email: dsheldan@gmail.com).

  1. That's great, I was planing to harvest most of the peas remaining soon next week as they are small and seem to be a different round variety than the flatter snow peas we took out already. Next week would be good to harvest the garlic; week days are better right? how about next Friday?

  2. Friday sounds great. Hopefully we will get dry weather. We should keep an eye on the forecast...if there is heavy rain next week, we should think about pulling the garlic out before that happens, since the plastic cover doesn't keep the rain out fully. So far the forecast looks promising for Friday though.

  3. The forecast looks good for the whole week, how long would the harvesting and storage process take for the garlic on Friday? I'm only free after 4:30 but if we needed more time, I could ask the volunteers to arrive earlier. Cheers.

  4. We need to be able to get into the school to store the garlic, so earlier in the day would be better, in order that we can finish earlier than 1pm. The harvesting shouldn't take too long. It's just a matter of yanking the garlic out of the ground. Hanging the garlic might take longer, as we will have to tie some string up in the physics prep room from which to suspend the garlic plants.

  5. We need to finish before 1pm? Should I ask our volunteers to meet at the garden by 10am this coming Friday? or is it alright to wait until Tuesday Aug. 7th after BC Day Holiday to harvest the garlic? I will be completely free then. Thanks.

  6. I think we need to be able to have the garlic out of the ground by 1pm or so, as I am not sure about the school schedule that day and I want to know I can get into the room. As for moving it until after the weekend, we don't know what the weather will be, and I don't want to take a chance of them getting rained on again. I haven't looked at the garlic in a couple of days but I strongly suspect it will be ready on Friday or so.

If we can get a few people there at 10am on Friday, that would work. Sorry you can't be there, Brian.
