Beans, Tomatoes and Buckwheat

The beans are really growing in the heat!  I saw the flowers today too on the bean plants.  I think we should have quite a few beans by the time school starts in September.  One thing to note however:  you should not do any pruning or cutting of the beans.  They may grow past the top of the pole, but that is OK.  They will form a nice solid clump of green, and will eventually become a big green wall.    Also, you shouldn't need to tie the beans up as they are quite good at growing up poles.   In other words, beans, like zucchini, like to be left alone.

Also, I see the tomatoes have been harvested.  Just make sure the tomatoes you harvest are red, as they will not ripen very well after being picked.  Thanks also for tying up the tomato poles so well.

Finally, we seeded a cover crop of buckwheat in the west-most garlic box.  Since the buckwheat is growing on the surface, it will need to be watered by hand for the first week or two.  I gave it a sprinkle today, but for the first while it will need daily watering.  Many of the seeds are already sprouting, which is really amazing, as it only took a few short days.  By the looks of it, the buckwheat will be growing quickly by the end of August.

I might come by to meet you guys tomorrow (Wednesday) at 10am or so.  Perhaps we can explore what needs to be done to get the garden board put up.  See you then!

  1. That's great! I'm not sure which size bolts or nails are needed to attach the brackets to the Info Board; we can take a look tomorrow. Thanks for coming by.
