Garlic Harvesting on Friday, August 3, 2012 at 10am

It is time to harvest the garlic.  We will meet to harvest the garlic and to tie it up to dry on Friday, August 3 at 10am.  I did a test harvest today, and it is definitely ready.  I pulled out a few bulbs.  The individual cloves are visible, but the covering of the garlic seems intact.  Here is a picture of one of the cloves:

We have quite a few to dig up, and then to hang, and it should be fun.  See you there!

  1. Hello Mr. Sheldan, unfortunately due to many members having summer school, our volunteers may not be able to get to the garden by 10:30 or 11. Kathy and Lina should be there by 10:30 and Preston by 11. Others are all busy at the time, sorry I can't be there. Do you have an idea of what we could plant in the empty box for the rest of the summer? I was thinking of squash, pumpkin or the like.

  2. Okay. It's too bad, because it will be fun. I think the garlic needs to come out now...from what I understand, there is a one week window in picking garlic, and I think ours is towards the end of that window, as some of the outer skins were decaying.

As for squash and pumpkin, I think it will be too late to get any real yield. I've seen several zucchini plants recently that are already full grown. I thought buckwheat would be a good crop to plant as a cover crop...it grows quickly, tolerates heat, and looks very nice. It will require nearly daily hand watering initially as it will be seeded on the surface out of the reach of the drip lines. Once it starts, it will be nearly a foot high in a matter of weeks.
